Single: RUTH - Who Are You Living For?

RUTH Who Are You Living For?

RUTH - 'Who Are You Livng For?'

Info: Co. Kerry solo artist RUTH has released her very first piece of music in the form of the debut single 'Who Are You Living For?' The single, which came out only yesterday, follows her recent performance at Whelan's Ones To Watch festival on its opening night. With a background in classical music, Ruth started composing songs at the age of twelve, and has been honing her craft ever since. This has merited her an ever growing fanbase, as well as a high level of respect from her contemporaries. A natural performer, she boasts an energetic and exciting set.

Without letting it prejudice me too much it is always pleasing to hear that an artist has a classical background because you know it will in some way positively influence the thought process behind the music, even if only on a subconscious level. That said, on RUTH's debut single there are no strains of that background in her music with regard to the sound of the track. 'Who Are You Living For?' is a straight up retro dance-pop groover with shades of electronic-influenced guitar sequences and drum beats. Vocally the chorus is gratifying in its anthemic reach, whilst on the verses she expresses a solemn veneer that creates a ponderous mood in between the uplifting choruses.

There's certainly a small bit of a stir beginning to surround RUTH already and it's easy to see why, her sound will easily traverse serious music fans and pop oriented tastes simultaneously if she can maintain or enhance the quality displayed here, my money is on the latter.

Pranks - 'New Friend' - Live from Tigh na Rí Rua

Info: Dublin two-piece Pranks have released a new video today for their latest single 'New Friend' recorded live at Tigh na Rí Rua in Co.Wicklow which the post rock grunge duo put together during a recent writing retreat. In 2015 the band released their debut single 'Ghost', were named as Nialler9's New Band of the Week and also played Hard Working Class Heroes and Whelan's Ones To Watch festivals. The pair plan to build on this momentum in 2016 and are forging ahead with the release of three new singles over the coming months.

From a heavy rock intro and incessant guitar loop, long-term friends Micheál Sheil (guitar / vox) and Gearóid Connaughton (drums), meld melodic choruses with a mechanical rhythm, musically and lyrically reminiscent of something you might have found on Weezer's classic 1996 album Pinkerton. Thumbs up from me and definitely a band I would be eager to catch performing live in 2016.

Video: Monster Monster - Pendulum (FKA Twigs)

Monster Monster - Pendulum (FKA Twigs Cover)

Info: Dublin duo Monster Monster (Ríona Sally Hartman, vocals / Mick Stuart, guitar) have released a new video in which they perform FKA Twigs' 'Pendulum', the second single from the Gloucestershire artist's 2014 album LP1. The cover is due to be part of a set that the band are putting together for more intimate gigs and it's probably the best I've heard Hartman's vocals which fit perfectly with Stuart's refined and tranquil guitar playing and use of effects. Monster Monster just played Whelan's Ones To Watch 2016 over the weekend where they were in top form once again and didn't fail to please.
