The Grey Merchant - Spotless (The Protecting Veil)

Info: Cork based recording collaborative, The Grey Merchant, announce details of a debut single release, 'Spotless (The Protecting Veil)', which will be released on November 08, 2016.

The Grey Merchant is the collaborative recording project of Cork based Indie trio Neon Atlas' bassist Enda O’Flaherty and a collection of friends and fellow musicians. Drawing comparisons with classic noise and stoner rock, influences like Kyuss and Fu Manchu can be heard.

Recorded with friends in kitchens and abandoned buildings, mixing at Cork’s Whitewell Studios, and Studio Silo, Stöðvarfjörð, the result is some noisy mood-rock that combines guitars, bass, and drums with a vein of political irritation; the old-fashioned way.

This is the debut release from The Grey Merchant on Demeanour Records, with further singles and an EP to follow in 2017.

'Spotless (The Protecting Veil)' from Cork's The Grey Merchant is a seriously impressive debut release. The track oozes cool and powerful atmospherics from the get go, akin in some ways to Public Service Broadcasting, and I'm not talking about the sample here, but moreso the drumming which is a forceful and integral part of the energy of the song. Wall of sound is an over-used but appropriate description, but it feels both open and free rather than claustrophobic, like being jettisoned down a dark tunnel at great speed, the sense of exhiliration the whole way through 'Spotless (The Protecting Veil)' is immeasurable. I will be most excited when the EP comes out next year, absolute quality stuff here.
