John Hynes - Caroline, I'm Yours
Info: Originally from Leixlip, Dublin-based singer-songwriter John Hynes has just released his debut single, 'Caroline, I'm Yours'. Having spent many years operating in other bands, most recently The Grand Wake, Hynes has struck out on his own. An official launch night for the new single will take place in the Vintage Room at The Workman's Club, Dublin, on the 20th of May.
'Caroline, I'm Yours' glows from start to finish, it's warm and recreates a scarily authentic mid to late 60's atmosphere. Hynes' vocals are perfectly matched to the music, a plodding yet calming bass-line, twangy guitars, and nuanced but multi-layered percussion wrap around you like a balmy summers evening from days long gone by. While his vocals don't touch on any of them, except perhaps the last in this list, the pervading tone conjures Scott Walker, Roy Orbison and Tim Buckley. There will undoubtedly also be comparisons to Father John Misty, one which is definitely audible in Hynes' vocal, but that would be to miss the woods for the trees, and future releases will no doubt confirm this. Very few, if any, Irish acts are dabbling in recreating baroque pop, and it's going to be intriguing to see where John Hynes goes from here.
