Single: Maria Kelly - june

Maria Kelly - june

Info: 'june' is the first single taken from 'notes to self', a collection of songs diarising Maria's move from Dublin to Berlin. Maria was suddenly faced with that well-known discomfort of starting over in a new city. The EP explores themes of leaving home and finding familiarity from within, even if that can sometimes be an uncomfortable thing to do. 'june' highlights these worries using Kelly's signature vulnerability and poignancy throughout.

As her silky smooth vocals softly soar, twinkles of electronica and gentle guitar strums are able to drift effortlessly underneath, creating a sound that is truly spellbinding. Talking about the track, Kelly elaborates, "the discomfort of starting over in a new city made me realise how much I relied on things outside of myself to make me feel okay. It forced me to be completely honest with myself; to deal with these emotions I would normally avoid, and to realise the power that comes with that honesty".

A change of scene is always exciting, that sense of adventure, new horizons, new people, new ideas. But when the door finally closes behind you and you are alone in that quiet, unfamiliar space, the subconscious mind starts to ask you questions, away from the noise and sounds of voices and crowded rooms filled with smiles. As time passes Maria Kelly gets better and better at articulating age-old human behaviours, which present themselves in a seemingly simple manner, but always leave a less than simple mark. On 'june' her vocal and the tenderness of her guitar playing don't speak to us in the normal manner a singer-songwriter might, in ways it doesn't feel like it's Kelly at all, but some divine oracle watching over proceedings and guiding us as far as it can, only to the point where we need to learn for ourselves however.

Maria Kelly plays Other Voices, Ballina this weekend, and Hard Working Class Heroes (Doyle's Bar).
