MADI - 'Dirty (Word)'
Info: Welsh singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Maddie Jones, performs alongside band members and Dan Fitzgerald (guitar, pedals, modular synth), Chay Lockyer (bass, synth) and Rich Welsby (drums, samples). The band were born earlier this year as a result of experimentation with production and electronic songwriting, and in-depth work with producer Charlie Francis (REM, Future of the Left, Sweet Baboo), after several successful years playing as Maddie Jones.
MADI believes in being more than just a band. Inspired by the relationship between colour and music, MADI directs videos, designs artwork, and builds sets. Inspired by the magical otherness of ideas like Boomtown and Burning Man, MADI wants to incorporate visual, immersive elements into the her live show experience. The audience become a part of it, not just observers. MADI’s development of ideas, collaboration with projection and lighting design, dance, circus, theatre and costume, makes for a sensory extravanganza.
One of the most arresting intro's to a track I've heard this year, Welsh alternative-pop and electronic act MADI's new single 'Dirty (Word)' drops a major sledgehammer of synths on your brain. That force makes way for a melodic verse backed by bubbling rhythm, but once again the chorus provides an enjoyably brash energy. The interplay and contrast between verse and chorus make for a very memorable experience which could be described as an assault on the senses, but one that is gleefully welcomed, mostly due to MADI's effervescent personality shining through with her strong vocal.
