Wednesday night saw DITSU host a line-up of up and coming local bands, organised by Ciara Brennan, aka She Bop Imagery, at The Workman's Club. The proceeds on the night went to the DRCC and thanks to the great organisation and large turnout a big donation was achieved.
On the music front I was delighted to finally catch Classic Yellow live, having been a fan of their music over the last year plus since they formed, their vibe is firmly planted in mid to late 1960's rock n' roll music, an era that first made me really fall in love with music, check them out here. Also an opportunity to see JOOCE on stage for the first time too, coincidentally, to my mind at least, they represent a great reinterpretation of spacey 1970's prog-rock, can't shake those Blue Oyster Cult / Deep Purple thoughts when listening to them recorded or live, listen here.
The night opened with two bands who are yet to release recorded material, there's always an element of excitement when you go in with a blank canvas, no clue as to what to expect. First up was L.A.W. (Leaning Against Walls), a five-piece that impressed with some really great guitar solos and vocals.
I couldn't have been alone in being blown away by Toy Girl, their set was outstanding, perfectly arced and teasing builds leading to spine-tingling crescendos. Main vocals were also highly impressive, ranging from sombre laments to soaring euphoria, some French lyrics thrown in to give off haute Melody Nelson vibes! It was a high energy affair from Toy Girl, and again they were another band on the night who held in their possession a superb lead-guitarist. I'm very excited to see how their story unfolds, and recommend catching them, and all of the acts, live if you can.
