Beach - Donuts
Info: Dublin five-piece Beach (Dave Barrett- lead vocals and guitar, Alex Conway - lead guitar and backing vocals, Adrian Garvey- drums, Bernard Kavanagh- bass, Simon Flynn - keys) recently released a new video for their latest track, 'Donuts', which premiered over on Clash Magazine. Together since 2013, the psychedelic and electronic rock group took a breather up until now and are currently gearing themselves up to return to the live stage with a notable supporting slot at The Roisín Dubh alongside critically-acclaimed synthpop solo act Chad Valley on the 12th of May.
'Donuts' opens with tick-tock percussion and droning vocals courtesy of Barrett, before guitars bounce along to an off-key duel with his singing. What follows is an incoherent yet fully functional mash-up of early The Verve, Happy Mondays' 'Step On' (slowed down x 10), and the bastard child of Depeche Mode and INXS spray-painted with 90's grunge. Confused? You should be, I was, but the trundling rhythm and assured direction of 'Donuts' is kind of awe-inspiring, tiny beads of familiarity hanging on to something very, very different. Beach are nothing if not interesting and they're pushing the boat out in all kinds of direction.
