Jinn Grin - The Answer
Info: What’s the point of going solo? A musical polymath versed in jazz studies and Madlib beats, Doug Stuart has spent the last several years etched deep into the grooves of some of the Bay Area’s funkiest ensembles, playing bass for The California Honeydrops, Bells Atlas, hundreds of jazz combos, session work, and most recently as keyboardist for Astronauts, etc. on their national tours accompanying Toro y Moi. Jinn Grin is his own adventure, though. Composed and produced by Stuart alone from start to finish, it’s the first time this artist has taken a step back from a rigorous gigging and touring schedule to offer his own, unfiltered musical expression. “The Answer” premieres May 10 on the Bandcamp weekly; with the EP set to release June 14.
Both Bells Atlas and Astronauts, etc. featured heavily on the blog last year with some great songs and an Album of the Year for me from the latter. It's always nice to find musicians within groups striking out on their own and succeeding whilst doing so. Jinn Grin's debut track veers closer to Astronauts, etc. for me but only to a point, a notable electronic layer is added on 'The Answer' and it's a light and breezy track that is sweet as it is short. I'm glad we don't have long to wait for the EP release next month to get a better idea of where Stuart is dipping his musical toes.
