Info: Elaine Malone is an Irish psychedelic-folk songwriter. Hailing from Limerick, she currently resides in Cork, where she has carved a name for herself as an idiosyncratic songwriter. Known for her haunting voice and poetic lyricism combined with grunge roots and psychedelic leanings. Her debut single 'You' was premiered on Nialler9 in February and received international airplay. Her recent appearances include Quarter Block Party, It Takes A Village and support slots for O Emperor, David Keenan and Marlene Enright.
Her debut EP Land was recorded with fellow artist Sam Clague in a small home studio over the course of a year. Also featuring on the EP are the twin ryhthm-section of Talos , Josh and Sonny Sampson. Sam Clague also features heavily as a multi-instrumentalist. 'Land' deals with heartache, apathy, the tragic death of Ann Lovett and the torture of first falling in love.
Opening track 'Vonnegut' (presumably named after the famous novelist Karl) recalls the tender but dense acoustic guitar of Leonard Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat' from Songs of Love and Hate, but there the similarities end on Elaine Malone's Land EP. Dealing with the tragic story of Ann Lovett through song is a heavy load to capture from one of the saddest events in modern Irish history, but Malone executes it with grace and respect. Charting the forbidden teenage romance, the cruel shame and the abandonment that followed, in its sparseness of sound Malone's powerful vocal relays the story with great clarity.
'No Blood' is an inviting piece, here Malone presents an old world jazz vocal รก la Julie London, the flighty mood of the music is in stark contrast with the vivid imagery delivered through her lyrics. The amiability of the acoustic guitar and bass almost acting like a metaphorical blanket of comfort to be shrouded around Lovett's shoulders as the 15-year-old gave birth alone to her stillborn son in the rain at a statue of the virgin Mary.
Malone's penchant for psychedelic-folk shines through brightly on the sleepy 'You', despite its sobering theme there's a sweet understated vibrancy brought together by the spacey rhythm of the guitar and percussion. Closing with the self-explanatory title of final track 'Mindless', it is the most poignant and sad moment on the EP, the soft vocal giving us space to ponder and reflect. Denial, condemnation, judgement and desertion all rear their ugly heads, and you can feel the pain on the behalf of another in Elaine Malone's vocal.
Although she may not feel it herself, Malone's choice of topic is brave and she handles it with great care, but doesn't let anyone off the hook in her sometimes scathing lyrics. As a whole of its parts, Land is an excellently crafted piece of story-telling through music, a story we would rather we never had to hear, but one she should be most proud of telling.
