Connan Mockasin
Info: Once a month REMY peruses the latest album releases to find which upcoming LP's tickle his fancy, and what might tickle yours, oh behave! Normally these playlists only contain ten singles from ten albums (sometimes 12), but for October there are a lot of really interesting releases, so for the first time we go to 16, and I'm personally looking forward to dipping my toes into all of them.
Starting with Connan Mockasin, the New Zealander shares Jassbuters on the 12th of the month, and holy god, the singles released to date are to die for, in particular 'Charlotte's Thong'. His 2011 sophomore album Forever Dolphin Love should be considered one of the masterpieces of the 21st century so far, but here Mockasin goes on a big tangent, the clue is in the album title, although it could as easily have been called Soulbusters.
The first of two Irish tracks featured on this list is 'Liberté' by Belfast's Arvo Party, easily one of the singles of the year, from II which will most likely feature on most album of the year lists here come December. This album is out now and a must for any fans of ambient electronic music, the likes of which you haven't heard before! The second Irish album is A Simple Life by Dublin's Hostess, which is released tomorrow (probably today by the time you read this). Hints of short-lived San Francisco new wave and synth-pop icons The Units abound, I've spent a good bit of time with this album and I love it very much.
Julia Holter - 'I Shall Love 2'
Other albums whose singles have piqued my interest are the self-titled album from Hush Kids which fans of Kings of Convenience will enjoy a lot. I really like where Julia Holter is going too on Aviary, it feels quite deep and detached in a really good way, both released on the 26th of October. STOP THE PRESS - a big banger on this list is Belgian artist Petite Noir (real name Yannick Ilunga) born in Cape Town, South Africa, the single 'Beach' here features Danny Brown in the finest of form, La Maison Noir could be one of the big big albums of 2018. I have quickly fallen for Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker's 'symbol' and look forward to losing myself in her third solo album abbyskiss, it's bare, giving and acoustic rarely sounded so good than here.
The big outlier, and I mean big as in highly intriguing and a little out of left-field, is Pleasureland by HALEY (Haley Bonar), the Canadian is proffering an album mixed with indie-rock and instrumental passages. I'm really interested in the new Richard Ashcroft album Natural Rebel too, the former The Verve man going for a honky tonk rock angle á la The Rolling Stones c. 1971. Obviously all these tracks and albums are hitting me in the feels in different ways, but to wrap up quickly, I'm loving HAERTS' atmospheric and dream-pop tastic 'No Love for The Wild', the dirty rock stylings of Greta Van Fleet, very Janis Joplin slash Neil Young. Fans of Marc Bolan's T-Rex will enjoy 'Body Talks' by The Struts, glam glam shabang, and there appears to be a strong return from Papercuts based on their last single 'Sing To Me Candy'.
Hostess - 'Frustration'
