Info: It's almost two years since I first heard Flecks on stage at The Workman's Club for Gigonometry, that night they did an amazing cover of Talking Heads' 'This Must Be The Place' towards the end of their set. But it was Freya Monks and Scott Halliday's originals that quickly made me a fan, many from their 2016 debut EP Girl. At some point in late 2017 the duo took a brief hiatus, sometimes I think of bands I was into back in 2014-2016 in particular and every now and again wonder will they back, although more recently active, Flecks fell into that category, and I'm so happy they didn't call it a day.
New single 'Samurai' was released just yesterday, the first of four they plan to share over the coming months. The synth is very chunky and wholesome here, holding down a rock-steady and swaying rhythm, the vocals are the perfect accompaniment, a counter-balance of softness and calm. What makes the new single stand out the most is how Flecks add little elements of a few different genres and scatter them across 'Samurai', it's not just for the hey of it, it works and sounds deliberate. There's a thoroughly modern experimental electronic tinge particularly in the final third, it's choppy and bold, but also tiny strands of 90's trip-hop, which, despite being a small part of the track, make themselves heard noticeably, and finally some authentic 80's retro synth, on of my three musical weaknesses. Really looking forward to seeing them live again soon, and hearing the next three tracks, can't shake the feeling that they might be about to finally storm the place.
