Info: Split_Pin are duo David and Daire Stanley from Dundalk who released their debut three-track EP, Faith in a Face towards the end of last month. Whilst the production on all three songs is rough and ready, this does not detract from the enjoyment of the music.
Opener 'All Horizons Down' (above) has a bluesy-rock swagger, it's moody yet upbeat and rises gradually from its muted guitar and piano intro to build into a fine alt-rock track. The second (and self-titled) track is an interesting effort, a mix between pop and soulful vocal, and guitar effects that recall The War on Drugs, it leaves you with a warm feeling by track's end.
An isolated guitar solo echoes before being joined by some solid vocals before final song 'The Siege' stirs up some gritty rock energy, there's some lovely bass-lines and interchange between drums and guitar once again, which feels almost improvised on the spot. It does turn into a right indie rock banger by the final quarter, a little bit Idlewild, a little bit ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.
Yeah it might sound like a set of (well made) demos missing a small bit of polish, but I don't mind at all, there's plenty of subtle inventiveness (like the harmonisation on the lead guitar) and quality musicianship to suggest that Split_Pin are ones to keep an eye and ear out for.
