Irish Playlist #036: Lōwli, Dioscó na mbó, Somebody's Child, Sonja Sleator & JaXson

Lowli - Feathers
Lōwli

Info: REMY's latest Irish independent playlist is here featuring some of the best tracks to be released over the last few weeks. Notably, a debut single from brand new Dublin indie-pop act Somebody's Child is causing a wee stir since its release this week with plaudits coming in from 2FM's Dave Fanning, Hot Press and Tony-Clayton Lea at The Irish Times.

1) Lōwli - 'Feathers'

Dublin-based alternative solo act Lōwli released her latest single 'Feathers' this week. Retaining the contemplative demeanour of previous release 'Fallow', the new track also has a more airy personality, a rhythmic melody that bounces us along with glee like a flighty ball across its 3 minutes. There's something very unique about Lōwli's song-writing, vocal and style, which will leave us eager for more so we can pinpoint exactly what that is. Lōwli plays CrowBar in Temple Bar this Tuesday.

2) Dioscó na mbó - 'Tea Song'

Only Dioscó na mbó could make an auld cup of tae the topic of a cosmically funky and groove-laden ode to the humble staple beverage of the huddled masses. 'Tea Song' adds to their growing repertoire of always surprising and outside-the-box methods when it comes to serving up grinding electronic missives.

3) Somebody's Child - 'Make You Alright'

The fuss around Somebody's Child might be about to get hot (yeah, I know!) with his debut release 'Make You Alright'. Critics are right to point out that there doesn't seem to be anyone else in Ireland taking the particular angle on indie-pop. Not so much re-inventing the wheel, as sending it in the opposite direction, it's a no frills approach to delivering catchy guitar-based pop with an electronic hue. Buried deep in the music my brain shouts 'Razorlight', but what's most interesting is that sneak peak at the electro.

4) Sonja Sleator - 'Ghost'

Belfast singer-songwriter Sonja Sleator's new single 'Ghost' is instantly appealing and touches on many tastes I hold personally, with the intro funnily reminding me of fellow Ulster artist Gabriel Paschal's Blake solo work, and the chorus having an early The Black Keys spin on it. Sleator captures the essence and theme of the track so well with her versatile and soft vocal style, and despite the general mood, there's also a sunny Californian sheen on the track. One to catch at Hard Working Class Heroes at the end of the month for sure.

5) JaXson - 'We Were Born'

One thing we're thankfully producing at a very high standard over the last 2 years in particular is quality pop music, artists like St. Bishop and Tim Chadwick lead the way in saving us from the barrel-scraping stuff we gave up listening to on the radio a long time ago, and now Wexford's JaXson is firmly pushing into the leading pack. 'We Were Born' ticks all the right boxes and then some, it's addictive after only a handful of listens, and has sufficient musical depth to engage across its breadth.
